Reforçar o vínculo afetivo através de uma massagem carinhosa após o nascimento é essencial para que o bebê sinta-se amado e protegido. Foi descoberta pelo Dr. Frédérick Leboyer que numa viagem a Índia, ele observou e registrou o ritual que uma mãe indiana paraplégica, chamada Shantala, realizava em seu bebê, e como ele ficava calmo e satisfeito com essa massagem. Admirado com esta bela cena, Leboyer batizou esta técnica com o nome desta mãe.
Shantala traduz um momento especial oferecendo a oportunidade dos pais terem um contato mais prolongado com seu bebê dando continuidade e fortalecendo a vinculação afetiva. O toque carinhoso é a melhor forma dos pais se aproximarem do bebê, transmitindo amor e carinho através das mãos.

A massagem é realizada com o bebê desnudo, sobre as pernas estendidas, sentado no chão, mas não em contato direto com o solo. A coluna deve estar ereta e os ombros relaxados, se necessário use almofadas para apoiar a região lombar. Também é indicado retirar anéis e relógio. O local deve estar tranqüilo, aquecido e acolhedor, a música é opcional. Usa-se óleo de origem vegetal para facilitar o deslizamento das mãos.
A aplicação dura de 15 a 30 minutos, dependendo da idade do bebê e aceitação ao toque. A partir de um mês de vida os bebês já podem receber Shantala, respeitando-se apenas a cicatrização umbilical e a descamação da pele. Não há restrições em iniciar Shantala com crianças mais velhas, necessitará apenas de adaptações quanto à postura da massagem.

Para completar a sensação de relaxamento e retirar o excesso de óleo, o pai pode banhar o seu bebê, deixando o corpo imerso na água. É interessante já deixar o banho pronto antes de iniciar a massagem para não haver dispersão. Com certeza após esse momento a mamãe entrará em ação, pois o bebê desejará ser amamentado e dormirá relaxado!
Permita-se encontrar momentos diários de contato corporal com o bebê, alimentando-o através do toque, onde as palavras não alcançam.
