Publicado no British Medical Journal, o estudo sueco analisou 400 crianças nascidas de gestações com baixo risco. Alguns tiveram o cordão umbilical cortado (ou clampeado) 10 segundos após o nascimento, enquanto no outro grupo houve espera de 3 minutos para concluir o processo. De acordo com os pesquisadores, para cada 20 bebês com cordões clampeados após 3 minutos, um caso de anemia foi evitado.
Atrasar o corte do cordão umbilical não traz problemas para o bebê
Os níveis de ferro no sangue desses bebês também foi testado mais tarde, aos 4 meses de idade. Neste caso, os recém-nascidos que passaram pelo clampeamento após 3 minutos apresentaram melhores níveis de ferro no sangue e sofreram menos casos de anemia, quando comparados ao grupo em que o cordão foi cortado logo após o nascimento.
Segundo os especialistas suecos, essa pausa é necessária para que o sangue rico em oxigênio chegue até os pulmões do recém-nascido, estabelecendo completamente a respiração e elevando os níveis de ferro no organismo.
Geralmente, o cordão umbilical é cortado no primeiro minuto após o nascimento. Os médicos costumam cortá-lo logo que o bebê nasce por que o contato com o sangue da mãe pode levar ao desenvolvimento da icterícia, doença que causa um tom amarelado na pele do recém-nascido. Os pesquisadores suecos afirmam que a pausa para efetuar o corte do cordão não eleva nenhum risco de saúde para mãe ou o bebê. A icterícia costuma desparecer naturalmente.
