Já está disponível para pais e mães de todo o Brasil uma cartilha da Anvisa que busca esclarecer as verdades sobre o armazenamento do sangue de cordão umbilical. Apesar desta prática ter crescido nos últimos anos, muitas pessoas ainda desconhecem os reais benefícios e as limitações desse tipo de transplante.O sangue do cordão umbilical é rico em células-tronco e por isso pode ser uma alternativa no tratamento de doenças hematológicas. Porém, são raros os relatos da realização de transplantes de sangue de cordão autólogo em nível mundial. Também não há estatísticas quanto ao uso e eficácia destes tratamentos. Um dos motivos é que o sangue de cordão pode carregar o mesmo material genético e os mesmos defeitos responsáveis por uma doença que venha a aparecer nos primeiros anos de vida da criança. O uso de células do cordão da própria pessoa é desaconselhado, por exemplo, em casos de leucemia.
No Brasil, entre 2003 e 2010, 45.661 unidades de cordão umbilical foram armazenadas em bancos privados, mas apenas três foram utilizadas para transplante autólogo, ou seja, do próprio doador. A grande maioria dos transplantes que utilizam as células-tronco do sangue de cordão é realizada com células armazenadas em bancos públicos. Mais de 10 mil pacientes no mundo todo foram tratados desta maneira.
Atualmente, o tratamento de doenças não hematológicas com o sangue de cordão umbilical é muito mais uma promessa do que uma realidade.
A cartilha também busca incentivar a doação para o banco público. Esta é a melhor maneira de garantir que o material guardado será útil no tratamento de algum paciente.
